A poem written by Dylan Woolridge, best friend of Duncan Leichtenberg, and read during Friday's funeral service:
a
I turned around and you were gone
A flash and you disappeared
Time was stolen from our friendship
Being gone makes my stomach feel weird
a
I have so many questions
It's hard to understand
That you won't be here anymore
A best friend to hold my hand
a
I wonder where you are right now
I wonder if you can hear my words
I hope that you are smiling down
It is neat to fly with the birds?
a
Being a little kid is hard
It's really hard to be here alone
It's harder than big people think
I just want you to come back home
a
I want you to come back to my house
I want to laugh and I want to play
I want to share my toys with you
I want this bad stuff to go away
a
You always made me smile
Sitting next to each other in school
We shared our favorite things
Stealing that from us was cruel
a
Wrestling season is going to be different now
I wore my pin for you today
I'll win a medal next season just for you
I'll put it on display
a
Who will I warm up with at practice?
At tournaments we shared candy until we felt fat
Being in the bleachers together
Was as much fun as wrestling on the mat
a
I can see your house from my backyard
Can I talk to you when I'm alone?
Will you watch me play outside?
I want to call you on the phone
a
I need to talk to you here
I need to say goodbye today
I need my heart to heal
I need my bad dreams to go away
a
Promise to watch down on us
Smile down on your friends and your mom
Make your smile light up the sun
Make huge rainbows come
a
I bet your angel wings are neat
How fast can you fly?
Faster than a dog can run?
Why did you have to die?
a
Take care of little Jack
Your mommy can't do it right now
I know he's really your very best friend
I know that you know how
a
Tell God we said hello
Tell Him we really miss you too
I'll save a seat next to me in class
Come visit me when I'm blue
a
I know you won't be coming back
I will forget you never
A best friend lives inside your heart
And you will live in mine forever
