LeROY - People questioned after a standoff Friday at a Champaign hotel ended up not being connected to the McDonald's robbery that morning in LeRoy, LeRoy police said Saturday.

One man in that standoff has been arrested in connection with the Thursday night burglary of a McDonald's restaurant in Mahomet, LeRoy police said in a press release. He was in Champaign County jail Saturday on an arrest warrant from California, awaiting local charges.

"Our guys are actively trying to find our suspect right now," LeRoy Police Chief Gordon Beck said. "He's still out there."

The Mahomet and LeRoy police departments developed leads Friday that led them to suspects at the Red Roof Inn at Interstate 74 and Neil Street in Champaign, LeRoy police said.

A man and two women refused to come out of their hotel room when police contacted them about 3 p.m. Friday, police said. Police from LeRoy, Mahomet and Champaign, including the Champaign SWAT team, were on the scene.

The suspects came out about four hours later and were taken into custody for questioning.

"What happened was they located the room that he (the suspect in the Mahomet burglary) was in, and since there was a possible weapon involved, we asked for help" from the Champaign Police Department, Beck said. "They came in and were very good, and we were glad to see them."

Another male was detained at a local business near the hotel. He and the two women were taken to the Champaign Police Department and questioned regarding the Mahomet burglary and the LeRoy robbery.

Those three later were released, Beck said.

LeRoy police are continuing their investigation of the robbery.

A man entered the LeRoy McDonald's with a handgun about 5 a.m., when the store was opening, police said.

He forced employees at gunpoint into a walk-in cooler and then stole an undetermined amount of cash, police said.

The employees were not locked in the cooler, but the robber told them not to leave, Beck said.

An employee called police on a cell phone from the cooler. Police from LeRoy, Farmer City and the McLean County sheriff's office responded to the scene within minutes, Beck said.

LeRoy police are not releasing a description of the suspect because of the ongoing investigation, he said.
