BLOOMINGTON - Authorities want to pick up more than $23,000 in electronics and a car from a couple accused of stealing and possessing thousands of dollars in gold jewelry and other items taken in a string of burglaries between March 2008 and January 2009.
Brian Shiers, 37, of Normal is charged with residential burglary, attempted burglary and money laundering. His wife, Theresa Shiers, faces charges of possessing stolen property and money laundering.
Among the 57 items the prosecution seeks to retrieve from the Shiers are computers, a Bose wave radio, TVs, a digital camera, stereo systems, a Nintendo Wii and 35 games, and $575 in cash. A 2009 Mazda Axela also is among the items purchased with proceeds from the burglaries, prosecutors said.
If a judge approves the forfeiture, the items could be taken and retained as possible evidence. The property eventually could be sold, with money divided among police, the state's attorney's office and the state.
"It's clearly inappropriate for them to benefit financially from taking money and property from these victims. Unfortunately, the law does not allow us to return the money to the victims. It does allow us to prevent them from keeping their ill-gotten gains," said Mark Messman, chief felony prosecutor for McLean County.
An April 29 hearing is scheduled.
Brian and Theresa Shiers have both pleaded not guilty. He remains jailed in lieu of $15,000. She was released after posting $5,000.
