NORMAL - A man fleeing from police in a stolen car caused two minor accidents as he raced and weaved through rush-hour traffic Monday evening in Normal, police said Tuesday.

Officers spotted and tried to stop the stolen Oldsmobile Cutlass after the eastbound driver failed to stop at the intersection of Division and Center streets, police said. He headed north on Main Street and weaved through traffic and partly onto the sidewalk near University Cinemas, 1010 S. Main St.

Officers didn't try to keep up with the driver and lost sight of him as the Oldsmobile neared College Avenue, police said. The car was soon found crashed along the Main Street ramp onto northbound Interstate 55, and the man was not located.

Nobody was injured in a fender-bender near the intersection of College and Main and another farther north along Main Street, police said. The fleeing car apparently caused those accidents but was not involved in them, police said.
