ATLANTA - A cafe re-creating the Palms Grill Cafe circa 1938 is expected to become another Route 66 tourism draw for the village.

The next phase of the Downey Building renovation project in downtown Atlanta, which involves moving the local museum from the library into the building, also will include the restaurant, said Bill Thomas, treasurer for the Atlanta Library and Museum. The restaurant was in the 1867-era Downey Building from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Thomas said the library board is having discussions with someone to manage and operate the business that will complement, not compete, with the Country Aire restaurant in Atlanta.

"We're just thrilled," said Thomas. "We hope this is a huge draw for Atlanta."

Around 6:30 p.m. April 24, the replica Palms Grill Café neon sign will be lighted officially in a small ceremony. The event will include local officials and representatives from Route 66 organizations.

The first phase of structural work, which cost about $150,000, is about done. Fund-raising efforts for the second phase will begin in May, he said.

That phase will include adding a 40-foot-wide, two-story addition to the back of the Downey building that will include an elevator, exhibit space and a climate-controlled space to store artifacts.

"This has been a lot of work and has taken awhile, but I definitely think it's great for the library and museum," said Thomas.

Delavan candidates - There will be a Meet the Candidates night for the Delavan Community Unit District 703 school board at 7 p.m. April 2 at the school complex's Poppenga gym.

Mackinaw business expo - The Mackinaw District Public Library will host a Business in the Community expo from 7 to 8 p.m. March 27 at 117 S. Main St. The event will include business displays, refreshments, prizes and story time for children.

The expo is the second program using the $3,000 Bridging the Gap grant the library received from the Illinois State Library to purchase nonfiction materials.

Village needs help - The village of Deer Creek is looking for anyone in the community interested in serving on the planning commission and zoning board.
