DANVERS - Dense fog may have played a role in the death of a 20-year-old Stanford man in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning in rural Danvers, the McLean County coroner's office said.
John R. Glenn, a volunteer firefighter, was driving north on Illinois 122 just west of Illinois 9 around 5:10 a.m. when he lost control of his car and hit a utility pole, Coroner Beth Kimmerling said in a statement.
Glenn was unresponsive and trapped in the 2007 Chevy Cobalt when rescue crews arrived, she said. Glenn and his passenger, who was out of the car and moving around, were taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.
Glenn was pronounced dead at BroMenn at 6 a.m. Thursday, Kimmerling said. The passenger, Andrew Bridgewater, 20, of Stanford, was in good condition Thursday, said a clinical coordinator at BroMenn.
Glenn was a volunteer firefighter with the Stanford-based Allin Township Fire Protection District and served in the Army, Kimmerling said. He was headed into work as a security guard for Allied Barton Security Services providing security at Mitsubishi Motors North America.
An autopsy showed Glenn died from multiple injuries, including head, neck, chest and abdominal trauma. The coroner said it was not determined whether he was wearing a seat belt. Forensic analysis of the vehicle's crash data recorder may determine that.
Danvers Fire Department and EMS, McLean County sheriff's police and state police responded to the crash. The coroner's office and state police continue to investigate.
