BLOOMINGTON - Police have released squad car video from their January pursuit and fatal shooting of accused armed robber Robert Sylvester. | VIDEO: Police chase footage | Photo gallery | Pantagraph photographer's story | Report: Shooting justified
Sylvester, 57, was shot Jan. 5 after a high-speed chase through Lexington and a portion of Interstate 39, ending at Interstate 55 north of Normal Community West High School.
On Tuesday, the McLean County Sheriff's Department released videos from two squad cars and the Lexington Police Department released video from one police unit in response to a Freedom of Information Act request from The Pantagraph.
The final phase of an investigation into the shooting came last week with an opinion from McLean County State's Attorney Bill Yoder that police acted properly in shooting Sylvester, who was armed with a modified air pistol. Sylvester was a suspect in several armed robberies, including a Jan. 5 robbery of the Check 'n Go on West Market Street in Bloomington.
According to the report, a state trooper fired the fatal shot that struck Sylvester in the head. Found in Sylvester's vehicle after the shooting was a receipt for the BB gun and $2,420 in cash.
The video footage depicts the Lexington car initiating a pursuit that took officers on PJ Keller Highway, around Lake Bloomington, and onto I-39. County cars picked up images of the chase as Sylvester dodged vehicles on the interstate before his tires exploded from "stop sticks," forcing him to stop.
The video also shows officers firing multiple shots at Sylvester, along with the lengthy process of handling the crime scene.
