BLOOMINGTON - A 58-year-old man is accused of faking a bank robbery April 25 in order to get police to arrest him.

Larry L. Newnum, listed in a court file as homeless, was in custody Friday in lieu of $1,000 on a charge of false report of an offense.

Police and a prosecutor said Newnum entered Chase, 413 E. Washington St., about 3:40 p.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money. When a teller put a bag of cash on the counter, Newnum repeatedly said "Aren't you going to call police?" said Bloomington Police spokesman Duane Moss.

Newnum was found about a block from the bank and arrested without incident, Moss said. He was taken to and admitted to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.

The man told officers he intended to be arrested, and he did not intend to take any cash, Moss said. He told investigators he was looking for help.

It's unclear how long Newnum was hospitalized, but he was arrested by Bloomington police Thursday morning on the false report charge.
