100 years ago
Aug. 28, 1908: Ezra M. Prince, 77, died yesterday at Brokaw (later BroMenn) Hospital. He had been ill. He was active in the historical community for many years. (His writings on local history endure today.)
75 years ago
Aug. 28, 1933: Bloomington schools issued their 1933-34 calendar with these highlights: classes begin September 5; Christmas vacation runs December 15-January 2. BHS commencement will be January 19 and June 2. (There is no more mid-year graduation.)
50 years ago
Aug. 28, 1958: Three ordinary looking guys entered the Saratoga Billiards Parlor, 109 West Front, to play pinball and pool. But they were actually state agents. When a pinball game paid real money, they arrested manager Claude Allen for allegedly not buying gambling stamps.
25 years ago
Aug. 28, 1983: An Eisner-Osco store is coming to Hovey and Cottage Avenues. It's part of the Alexander Road expansion project connecting the west sides of Normal and Bloomington. (Today the store is a Jewel, and expanded Alexander Road is Martin Luther King Drive.)
