LeROY - The walls are up, much of the concrete poured and inside work is about to begin at Replex, a recreation center that is a combined project of the LeRoy Park Board and City of LeRoy.

Site manager David Jenkins thinks most of the interior will be finished by the first of March.

"The aluminum storefronts and windows throughout the structure are under way with completion scheduled for early December," said Jenkins. "The concrete block walls within the locker rooms have been completed and the mechanical, electrical, plumbing rough-in is progressing very well."

The large building, which borders Pearl Street, will house a gymnasium, mechanical area and an activity room on the first floor. A 10-foot walking track hugs the exterior wall of the gym.

The wellness area, with a variety of exercise equipment, will be on the second floor, accessible by stairs and an elevator.

The front entrance faces Washington Street. The entry will include the reception area, administrative offices, activity room, restroom, locker areas and a concession area. A window provides a view of the wading pool, landscaping and outside pool.

Also planned are an indoor pool, lifeguard area and a second mechanical room. Two large windows will be installed at the building's corner near Washington and East streets to allow for natural light for the swimmers.

The estimated cost is $4.4 million. LeRoy passed a referendum that raised the local sales tax by a half-percent to finance the bonds.

The LeRoy Park District contributed $100,000 per year from its existing revenue and the city will contribute $250,000 a year.

A minimum of $100,000 is to come from fundraising. The park district will finance the upkeep and pay the staff. The park district boundaries are the same as the school district, so access to Replex includes rural households as well.

A Replex board has been put together to get through the construction and the logistics of getting everything up and going. They soon will hire a temporary manager to help get the staff hired.

A mass mailing of membership forms to residents of the park district are going out this week. Forms also will be available at various businesses and city hall. Memberships also are available to those living outside the LeRoy Park District.
