BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington police lieutenant's residence was one of at least six burglarized last week in the Twin Cities, the latest in a string of burglaries where suspects gained entry through open garage doors, police said.
Nicholas K. Evans, 18, was charged with residential burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle in connection with the burglary at the lieutenant's Bloomington home on Aug. 13.
Police also suspect Evans played a role in at least five other burglaries last week - four in Bloomington and one in Normal - said Bloomington police spokesman Duane Moss. The investigation into those burglaries continued Wednesday, and no formal charges in those cases had been filed against Evans.
In all six burglaries last week, entry was gained through open garage doors, and items stolen included iPods, laptop, cell phone, cigarettes, alcohol and restaurant gift cards, Moss said. There's no indication the lieutenant's residence was burglarized because he was a police officer, and police believe it was a coincidence, Moss said.
Evans was arrested Friday after an interview with police. Information about how police made contact with him was not immediately available.
Evans was being held Wednesday at the McLean County jail in lieu of $5,000 on the two charges from the burglary at the lieutenant's home. He is due in court again Aug. 29 for an arraignment.
Evans had been due in court Sept. 5 for a status hearing on more than a dozen previously filed counts of residential burglary in connection with a string of burglaries last spring in Normal. He was released on a personal-recognizance bond April 16 on those charges.
In those cases, Evans is accused of gaining entry to residences through open garage doors. Police believed the burglaries were connected because they happened at similar times and similar types of quick-grab items were taken, such as electronics, cash and keys.
