NORMAL - The Normal City Council will consider a keg registration ordinance Monday that was prompted by a Twin City group in 2007.

Bloomington-Normal Community Campus Committee wanted a way to track and limit the sale of beer in kegs. The committee includes staff members from Chestnut Health Systems and Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan universities.

The town also received letters from ISU, IWU, Lincoln College and Heartland Community College supporting the proposal.

The issue went to the Bloomington Liquor Commission and was the topic of several hearings. The commission recently approved a draft and passed it on to Normal.

The Normal Liquor Commission will discuss the proposal at 6 p.m. Monday and the City Council will consider adopting the proposal when it meets at 7 p.m. Both meetings take place in the council chambers of City Hall, 100 E. Phoenix Ave.

In a report to the City Council, Normal Deputy Corporate Counsel Wayne Karplus said town staff eliminated a requirement that keg vendors report keg sales to the police. The police department believed that requirement was too burdensome and not beneficial.

The proposal would require anyone purchasing a keg to fill out a registration form that says it is unlawful to sell the beer or to furnish it to minors.
