LeROY - A Normal resident who was recently charged with felony drug possession has resigned her teaching position with the LeRoy school district.

LeRoy's school board met Monday night to accept the resignation of Miki Aberle, effective Nov. 25, and also to approve a settlement agreement, which pays Aberle through the end of the current semester.

Aberle, 27, was charged with the felony after cocaine was found in her pocket while police were investigating a domestic dispute at her home, according to a probable cause statement.

Aberle posted $300 to be released Nov. 15, hours after her arrest. She is due in court for Dec. 15 arraignment.

She had returned to her classroom at LeRoy High School before resigning.

"Being charged with a crime is not the same as being convicted of that crime," said Superintendent Gary Tipsord when asked about why the district did not dismiss Aberle.

Some offenses allow districts to terminate an employee before conviction.

However, Tipsord says those "dismissible offenses" are ones that occur on school grounds, those that are committed while a teacher is performing his or her job duties, or offenses involving children, and none of those applied to Aberle's charge.

"We do have expectations of how our employees should behave outside of the school, but those are not part of our school policies," Tipsord said.

While some districts have "work rules" to address employees' behavior outside of school, LeRoy does not, he said.

Tipsord said the district has no immediate plans to develop such rules.

After accepting Aberle's resignation, the board voted to employ Dan Caldwell to fill the vacancy.
