LEROY - Initial autopsy reports on the deaths of two LeRoy boys indicate that 7-year-old Jack Leichtenberg was stabbed in the back, and toxicology reports are pending for Jack and his brother, Duncan Leichtenberg, according to a statement from the Putnam County coroner. | Jack and Duncan's funeral | Lawmaker criticizes judge on House floor

The boys were found in the back seat of their father's car Sunday in a remote place in Putnam County. Their father, Michael Connolly, 40, of Bloomington, was found hanged a short distance from the car.

Authorities believe Connolly, who disappeared with the boys March 8, is responsible for the boys' deaths.

The preliminary autopsy results for the boys and their father were released Friday afternoon, hours after mourners packed a LeRoy church for funeral services for the boys.

Putnam County coroner Robert Cofoid said in his statement that a specific cause of death for the boys is pending toxicology test results, which could take two to three weeks.

Jack Leichtenberg had a single stab wound to his back, according to the report.

No mention was made of any trauma to Duncan Leichtenberg.

Prescription bottles were found at the scene, said Cofoid. No additional details were released.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle told The Pantagraph Friday that the investigation, including a determination of how long the father and sons were at the location, continues.

Putnam County police are working with the McLean County Sheriff's Department and several other law enforcement agencies on the investigation.

Authorities followed the wishes of the Leichtenberg family and withheld public release on the autopsy reports until after the boys were laid to rest.

Connolly picked up Jack and Duncan on Saturday, March 7, but did not bring them back to the LeRoy Police Department the following night where a family friend waited to return the boys to their mother, Amy Leichtenberg.

The disappearance followed several years of disputes between Connolly and his former wife.

Police said after a nationwide Amber Alert was issued for the boys March 9 that they were afraid the boys could be in danger based upon Connolly's history of suicidal threats and erratic behavior.

Connolly was recently laid off from his job as a salesman for a pharmaceutical company.
