BLOOMINGTON - Three Highland Park men were convicted Thursday of the aggravated battery of a member of the Illinois State University lacrosse team in what prosecutors described as a random attack last September.

Casey Lomoro, 21, Corey Lomoro, 25, and Matthew Walker, 24, pleaded not guilty Thursday at a stipulated bench trial, a proceeding that involved the prosecution and defense presenting a mutually agreed upon statement of facts to the court.

McLean County Circuit Judge Charles Reynard accepted the facts and found all three men guilty in the beating of the ISU athlete.

Assistant State's Attorney Kate Hartzell said that if called to testify, four witnesses would have said that the three defendants approached the victim and a second man in a parking lot on East Locust Street, Normal. The prosecutor said the three defendants were students at ISU at the time of the incident.

According to Hartzell, the victim did not know the three students.

"It was completely random," Hartzell said after the trial, adding the three defendants had been drinking.

According to the stipulated testimony, the victim would have said Casey Lomoro knocked a cell phone from his hand and began punching him without provocation.

The victim also would have said "the last thing he remembers about the incident is being kicked in the chin and later waking up on a stretcher in an ambulance," according to the court statement.

Two friends of the victim would have testified that Corey Lomoro "walked up and kicked (the victim) in the face, immediately rendering him unconscious," said Hartzell.

The Lomoro brothers and Walker were seen kicking and punching the lacrosse player, and Corey Lomoro was seen going through the victim's pockets, said the statement. The victim's wallet was found in Corey Lomoro's pocket during a search by police, Hartzell added.

Injuries to the victim detailed in the stipulation included stitches, a large laceration to his head and damage to six teeth.

Defense attorney Mark Sutter agreed that the witnesses would testify to the facts outlined in the statement.

Prior to reading the statement, the prosecutor dismissed one count of aggravated battery against each defendant and one count of armed robbery against Corey Lomoro.

Reynard set a July 9 sentencing date for the three who could be sentenced to probation or a prison term ranging from two to five years.
