SPRINGFIELD - Hauberg Indian Museum at Blackhawk State Historic Site in the Quad-Cities and Lincoln Log Cabin in Lerna could be reopened by Memorial Day.
Lawmakers approved an additional $1.6 million to help reopen some of the 14 shuttered sites Thursday. Dave Blanchette, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency spokesman, said those two sites, along with the Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, were first in line to be reopened.
"We want to get the historic sites with the highest visibility reopened as soon as possible," Blanchette said. "I think you can pretty much count on those three being reopened."
At this point it's unclear if all 14 sites could be reopened this year, Blanchette said.
The fate of the David Davis Mansion State Historic Site in Bloomington is unchanged. It has been operating with private money from the mansion's private foundation since Dec. 1, the day after former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, ordered the sites closed to cut costs. Funding for David Davis could be depleted by June 30.
"The ultimate goal is to get all the sites open, but we're not sure if this funding will allow us to do that or not," Blanchette said.
State Rep. Pat Verschoore, whose district includes Blackhawk, said it never should have been closed to begin with.
"That place has so many events in it that it surprised me in the first place," the Rock Island Democrat said. "There were thousands of people in support of keeping it open."
State Rep. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, felt the same way about Lincoln Log Cabin.
"It's been a long time coming and Rod Blagojevich never should have closed them to begin with," Rose said.
Although funding was set aside to reopen the parks this year, no additional money is in the 2010 budget for state historic sites. The agency is set to be merged with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which could cut costs.
Quinn has said he is committed to keeping the sites open.
