BLOOMINGTON - Bill Bentley hopes the Bloomington Planning Commission will move a boundary one block.

Under proposed zoning codes for the Main Street Corridor, Bentley's car dealership, Bentley Motors, 1508 S. Main St., would be in a district that would limit whether Bentley could expand or sell his business.

The boundary for a district that includes auto-oriented businesses stops across the street, at Lafayette and Main streets.

"I see what they are trying to do and it's a good idea to an extent, but it is not reasonable to the common man," Bentley said of the long-term project to improve Main Street between Bloomington and Normal.

The proposed codes developed by Farr Associates of Chicago will go before the Bloomington Planning Commission for a public hearing at 4 p.m. Jan. 14 at City Hall, 109 E. Olive St.

Most of the changes proposed in the corridor's zoning codes will not affect many businesses and properties in Bloomington, said Planning and Code Enforcement Director Mark Huber.

"The area covered by the code is already developed and for the most part it preserves what we already have," Huber said.

Huber said Bentley's property is a problem if the code is approved as presented.

"He could still operate it as it presently is with no problems, but any future plans he has for it would be impacted," Huber said.

Bentley has been at the Main Street location for 17 years, but the property has been used as a car dealership since 1957.

"I'm trying to dodge the big bullet here," Bentley added.
