BLOOMINGTON -- If you're 2 through 49 years old, don't have an underlying medical condition and aren't pregnant, you may be able to get the H1N1 influenza nasal spray vaccine soon.
Initial shipments are being distributed to health departments statewide, Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced Wednesday. Because the nasal spray vaccine has a live virus, it is intended for healthy people only.
The injection vaccine -- which is for most people because it has a killed virus -- should be distributed in Illinois in about two weeks, said IDPH spokeswoman Melaney Arnold.
The injection vaccine is for pregnant women, people who care for infants younger than six months old, health care workers and emergency medical personnel, anyone 6 months through 24 years old, and people ages 25 through 64 with a chronic medical condition.
Logan County Department of Public Health has received its first shipment of the nasal spray vaccine and is offering it to health care and emergency services workers and caregivers of infants if the people are healthy, not pregnant and between 2 and 49. People eligible may get the free vaccination 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the health department in Lincoln.
"Certain people are at higher risk of complications due to the novel H1N1 flu and others work with populations at risk of complications, so we ask you to allow these people to receive their novel H1N1 flu vaccine first," health department administrator Mark Hilliard said in a prepared statement.
Walt Howe, McLean County Health Department director, expects McLean to receive its first H1N1 vaccine shipments late next week.
Besides Logan, health departments expected to receive the nasal spray vaccine soon include Tazewell, DeWitt-Piatt, Ford-Iroquois, Marshall and Grundy, Arnold said. Eventually, every health department and hospital will have the vaccine, she said.
