SPRINGFIELD - Illinois veterans who want specialty license plates from the state can now personalize their plate numbers as well.

Before, Illinois veterans could get any number of specialty license plates depending on where they served or what awards they received. But they were only available with numbers.

Now, a veteran can mix in numbers and letters of their choosing to personalize their military license plate.

Veterans who already have a plate that doesn't expire soon can switch for a $29 fee. There's no additional fee to renew or personalize the plate in the first place.
