BLOOMINGTON - Cleanup efforts continued Sunday at Bent Elementary School following a fire Saturday afternoon.
Bloomington police Saturday arrested a 15-year-old juvenile in connection with the fire. The teen has admitted to starting the fire, Bloomington police Sgt. Mark Blain said.
Barry Riley, District 87 assistant superintedent, said school will be in session today, reiterating an announcement that appeared on the school's Web site Saturday.
"We're doing all we can do to get the classroom ready," he said.
The fire damaged one lower-level classroom at the school, said Bloomington Fire Capt. Eric Vaughn. Smoke filled the building but caused little damage to the rest of the building. No damage estimate is known yet.
Riley said a first-grade classroom was damaged in the fire, along with school supplies. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are at the school.
People interested in donating school supplies, including pens and markers can contact the District 87 office.
Crews responded to the school, 904 N. Roosevelt Ave., around 1:10 p.m. Saturday, where they found a broken window to a lower-level classroom and smoke escaping, said Vaughn at the scene.
Riley said Sunday he doesn't know if the juvenile ever attended the school. But he said the school captured the suspect briefly on video surveillance.
"We've cooperated by providing video surveillance (to the police)," he said.
One District 87 employee suffered a head injury during the cleanup. Riley declined to release the name of the employee.
A light valence fell on the employee's head, causing a cut that required about 17 stitches, Riley said.
