Police suspect the same man in the following armed robberies that have taken place in the past month in the Twin Cities:
Dec. 3: National City Bank, 1332 E. Empire St., Bloomington.
Dec. 9: US Bank, 1401 S. Main St., Normal.
Dec. 16: Freestar Bank, near Towanda Avenue and Empire Street, Bloomington.
Dec. 31: US Bank, 1401 S. Main St., Normal.
Dec. 31: Cash Store, 1700 Parkway Plaza, Drive, Normal.
Jan. 5: Check 'n Go, Market Street and Hinshaw Ave. Bloomington.
Monday's shooting of Robert Sylvester is the fourth fatal shooting by a Central Illinois police officer in the past nine years:
June 6, 2002: Cindy McCure, 38, is fatally shot by a Livingston County deputy who responded to a domestic dispute at her Chatsworth home. Police reports indicate McCure had a gun. No charges were filed against the officer, whom authorities did not identify.
March 2, 2002: Illinois State University student Nathan Ruch, 20, is fatally shot by Normal Officer James Merica after a short traffic chase. Charges were not filed against the officer.
July 24, 2000: Shannon Smith, 27, a mentally disabled Weston man, is fatally shot by Hudson Officer Jeffrey Gabor on Interstate 55 at Money Creek bridge. Gabor was cleared of murder charges. Smith was pursued by police after he allegedly left a Chenoa station without paying for gas.
