100 years ago
May 13, 1908: Mrs. Mary Flanagan lives on Sherman Street next to the city dump. She is suing the city because of the rotting trash and the extra refuse that finds its way into her yard from the dump. A trial to decide the case has just begun.
75 years ago
May 13, 1933: The ground apparently won't be dry enough for planting corn for two more days, according to Springfield agriculture statistician A.J. Surratt. He notes the late start will push the planting season into June.
50 years ago
May 13, 1958: Bloomington novelist Harold Sinclair just got word that his book, "The Horse Soldiers," will be made into a movie. It's a Civil War story based on real events, with Clark Gable in the lead role. (By the time the film was shot, it was John Wayne playing the lead.)
25 years ago
May 13, 1983: Dawn Delarocca, 20, of Bloomington, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge after she tried to hire an undercover officer for $20,000 to kill her husband. There was no murder, and assistant state's attorney Bradley Murphy says he will seek a seven year sentence.
