PONTIAC - A Chatsworth bar owner will spend the next six months in jail for videotaping women in the restroom and tanning bed room in his business.

William Lutson, 57, got the jail time and more than $10,000 in fines when he was sentenced on two Class 3 felonies and 10 Class A misdemeanors on Thursday by Livingston County Circuit Judge Harold Frobish.

"The thought 'dirty old man' has come to mind, but this is much more than that," Frobish said. "This was not a rash, impulsive act. You made a decision. You had many opportunities to say 'this is stupid.'"

In January, Lutson was found guilty of 24 counts of filming and taping 12 women in either the restroom or tanning room in the Grand Ole Bar in Chatsworth.

The felony counts were filed because two of the victims, who were older teenagers at the time, were minors. The sentence applies for one count for each of the victims.

Police found an extensive wiring system that led from the restroom to Lutson's living quarters in the building, where a monitor and video recorder were found. They also traced wiring that led to the room where a tanning bed was.

Lutson cooperated with police and gave them the tapes.

Lutson said his life has become a nightmare since the charges were filed, and he apologized to the victims, several of whom were in the courtroom.

"It was stupid, selfish and I have no excuse," he said. "The most painful of this is I have lost the trust of many people. I never showed those tapes to anybody else."

Lutson is in the process of selling the business.

The camera in the restroom was hidden in an overhead light and fan, almost directly over the toilet. The camera recorded at least 11 women, some of them more than once, in July 2005.

Videos of a teenager changing to use a tanning bed on seven different occasions were discovered by police. Lutson had hidden the camera in a laundry basket.

The restroom camera was found on July 26, 2006, by a man who was using the restroom because it had a working lock. At the time, the men's room did not lock. He reported the camera to police.
