Dunlap High School students were returning from field trip
LOSTANT - Police are continuing to investigate an accident that injured a number of Dunlap students when their bus hit a jackknifed semi on Interstate 39 south of the Lostant exit.
A full report, including possible charges, will be filed once paperwork is completed. "He (the investigating trooper) first wants to make sure all these kids were taken care of," said police spokesman Craig Graham.
State police said 53 Dunlap High School students and chaperones were returning from a Chicago event to their school near Peoria when the accident occurred. They were taken to three hospitals, where they were treated and released.
Bus driver Ernst Reisinger, 53, of Deer Park had to be extricated from the bus, whose front was severely damaged. The students were taken off the bus through an emergency window.
Truck driver Robert Connauey, 52, of South Carolina, was not injured. Also uninjured were occupants of two other vehicles that skidded into the bus.
The accident caused long delays in both directions Wednesday night but was cleaned up by Thursday morning.
