ELKHART - Land owned by Gillette M. Ransom in Elkhart has been dedicated by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission for the 36.04 acres called North Elkhart Hill Grove.

The land is among more than 728 acres of nature, land and water reserves in Champaign, Logan, Piatt and Woodford counties.

The commission said Ransom's land contains about 15 acres of old-growth forest and about 21 acres of forest that have been managed for a continuing, limited harvest.

Sugar maple, blue ash and burr oak are canopy species in the grove. Other common species in smaller diameter classes include slippery elm, American elm and hackberry.

"The commission's accomplishments in protecting the highest quality natural lands in the state are a profound benefit to future generations," said Harry Drucker, chairman of the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission. "Less than one-tenth of one percent of such lands remain in Illinois, and are irreplaceable."

Ransom couldn't be reached for comment.

Property dedicated as a land and water reserves may be used for activities including hiking, wildlife viewing, photography and approved scientific research. All activities and access must be approved by the landowners. In some cases, tax incentives and other benefits are available.
