ISU's enrichment programs beginning soon

NORMAL -- Illinois State University's Adult Enrichment Programs, which include Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors, will start in September and continue through January.

The classes are administered and sponsored by Senior Professionals. Most Academy of Seniors classes and all Morning with Professors will be at Illinois State University's Alumni Center, 1101 N. Main St., Normal.

Academy of Seniors offers four sessions. Each costs $45 except for Spoon River Anthology, which is $78. The sessions and speakers include:

  • Resurrecting Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology, Tim Hunt, ISU professor of English; 9:30-11 a.m. Sept. 14, 21, ISU Alumni Center. Bus trip planned for Sept. 30.
  • Discovering the Night Sky, Carl J. Wenning, retired professor of physics; 9:30-11 a.m. Oct. 7 and 21, Alumni Center; 9:30-11 a.m. Oct. 14 at ISU Planetarium., 7-9 p.m. Oct. 28, Sugar Grove Nature Center.
  • Intrigue, Money, Terror, War: The Geopolitics of the Former Soviet Union, Richard Tempest, professor in department of Slavic languages at the University of Illinois; 2:30-4 p.m. Nov. 9, 11, 16 and 18, ISU Alumni Center.
  • Indian Tribes of Illinois (1673-1832), Michael Waint, director of Dickson Mounds Museum; 1:30-3 p.m. Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26, ISU Alumni Center.

The Mornings with the Professors are scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays. The cost is $45 for all five sessions or $15 for individual sessions. May be paid at the door.

The sessions and speakers are:

  • Iran: A Brief History and Future Prospects; Hassan Mohammadi, professor in ISU economics department; Oct. 2.
  • How the War of Terrorism Affects You - Even if You Are Not a Terrorist; James Fagin, professor of criminal justice studies at Lincoln College; Oct. 9.
  • The Life and Times of Will Shakespeare; John W. Kirk, ISU professor emeritus; Oct. 23.
  • A Listener's Guide to Jazz; musician Andy Ament; Oct. 30.
  • 'Tis the Season to be Rhyming; Kathleen Kirk, poet and actor, and Larry Pennie, elementary educator and principal; Nov. 6.
  • Also, a new program, Classroom Journey, allows participants to take a bus trip with a professor. Lunch and a snack are included. Cost is $43. That program is:
  • More than Banks Along the Money Creek: Appreciating McLean County's History and Resources; Don Meyer, director of U of I Extension-McLean County; Aug. 26.
