BLOOMINGTON - Charges will be dismissed against a Springfield woman who allegedly lied to police about giving birth to a baby she agreed to hand over for adoption.
Jeanette Robinson, 26, was accused of giving false information to Normal police, telling them she'd given birth to a baby Dec. 15 at a Springfield hospital.
Robinson since has provided authorities with copies of medical records that indicate she had a miscarriage in May.
"We will be moving to dismiss the charges since we now know what happened. It's a matter that will have to be taken up civilly," said First Assistant State's Attorney Kim Campbell.
According to court records, Robinson since May had taken $3,800 from the adoptive parents for expenses. A Normal counseling service handling the agreement called police after Robinson failed to report to the hospital in December for a scheduled induced delivery.
At that time, Robinson told police she had delivered a baby boy but had changed her mind about going through with the adoption. The child was being kept by a friend in Springfield, she said.
Robinson was charged with obstruction of justice for giving false information to police about the birth. A check of hospital records by police indicated that Robinson had not delivered a baby.
The adoptive mother told The Pantagraph on Saturday that she did not know if Robinson had delivered the baby. The adoptive parents had successfully adopted a baby from Robinson in 2006.
