LINCOLN - On the first day school is open since a tragic accident took the lives of four area teenagers and left two injured, several students talked to ministers and counselors stationed at Lincoln Community High School on Tuesday. | Area districts feel Lincoln's pain

"We are grateful for the support received by counselors and ministers," Superintendent Dean Langdon said Tuesday morning as students returned from the three-day Presidents Day weekend.

He said counselors are stationed throughout the building and employees are walking through the school to be visible and supportive.

Students will be allowed to leave school for funerals but must have a parent call to confirm permission so parents know where they are, Langdon said.

Meanwhile, authorities officially identified Monday the four teens killed in the one-truck collision late Friday near Middletown in rural western Logan County.

Katelyn McCarty, 19, of Taylorville, a college student in Springfield, died in the emergency room at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, said Logan County Coroner Robert Thomas.

Christopher McGlasson, 19, of rural Middletown, an LCHS graduate; Katherine Carpentier, 15, of Lincoln, a sophomore at LCHS; and Ross Conrady, 18, of rural Elkhart, an LCHS senior, were pronounced dead at the scene, he said. | Ross Conrady obituary | Christopher McGlasson obituary | Katherine Carpentier obituary

Two passengers pulled from the pickup truck remained hospitalized in Springfield. Zach Rickord remained in serious condition and Clark Schoonover was in fair condition Wednesday morning, a nursing supervisor said. Both are LCHS graduates.

The crash was discovered about 11:30 p.m. along 1300th Street east of Middletown. The extended cab pickup truck carrying the six left the roadway shortly after crossing a rise known as "Polecat Hill." It struck trees about 40 feet from the road.

Thomas confirmed the identities of the teens late Monday afternoon using a combination of autopsy results, dental records and survivor statements, he said. All four killed in the crash are believed to have died from blunt force trauma, not from a subsequent fire, Thomas said.

The coroner described the area around Polecat Hill as an "up and down roller coaster-type roadway." But he said he didn't think the curve near the crash site was a factor.

A Logan County dispatcher said Monday nobody with the sheriff's office was available to answer questions Monday.
