MOUNT PULASKI - A 26-year-old woman from Macon County was killed Wednesday morning after losing control of her car on a slippery road and crashing into a semitrailer truck, police said.
Rachel E. Higgins of Mount Zion was northbound on Illinois 121 near Illinois 54 in Mount Pulaski around 8:05 a.m. when she lost control of her car and entered the southbound lane. Her car collided with a truck driven by McKindle Beler, 54, of Springfield and came to rest in a southbound ditch.
Higgins was pronounced dead at the scene, and Beler was not injured. He was able to glide his truck onto the shoulder, Illinois State Police said in a statement.
Police said it appears she lost control due to inclement weather and road conditions. The National Weather Service reported around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday that 3.6 inches of new snow was on the ground in Lincoln, about 12 miles northwest of Mount Pulaski.
Responding to the scene were state police, Mount Pulaski fire and EMS, state Department of Transportation, Logan County paramedics, and the Logan County coroner's office.
