RANTOUL - Authorities suspect carbon monoxide exposure has left a 2-year-old Rantoul girl dead and sent her family members to the hospital.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Friday that an autopsy will be done on Kashara Riggins, but he suspects carbon monoxide poisoning in her death. She was pronounced dead early Friday at an Urbana hospital.
Rantoul police said firefighters detected high levels of carbon monoxide in the home where the girl and her family were found. Two other children, a 6-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, along with their parents, also were taken to the Urbana hospital.
Police said batteries were installed in the home's carbon monoxide detector.
