PONTIAC - It's been awhile - if ever - that Pontiac festival-goers could quench their thirst with beer. That changes in June, after the City Council approved a beer tent for Summer Bash, an event that combines Heritage Days, car shows and professional muralists.

The 100 artists who comprise Walldogs will produce about 17 murals on the walls of downtown buildings.

Lori Fairfield, executive director of Pontiac Redeveloping Our United Downtown, cannot remember a beer tent or garden for any festival.

"We were thinking about how to draw people to the downtown area, and we are providing a lot of entertainment on some nights like live music," Fairfield said. "We thought that a beer tent would be a good fit and we are going to still make sure that we are creating a fun and family friendly atmosphere."

Logistics still are being worked out, although it appears the tent will be sponsored by DeLongs' Casual Dining and Spirits and all proceeds will benefit PROUD, a nonprofit organization.

Fairfield said alcohol will be located and remain in a fenced area along Washington Street across from the Livingston County Courthouse. All customers will have to show proper ID.

Ward 1 Alderman and Mayor-elect Bob Russell voted against the beer tent.

"We have merchants that make their living from food and alcohol, and they don't need any competition from us," Russell said. "I just don't think it's appropriate for a city organization which usually promotes alcohol-free nights to be raising funds through a beer tent."

Ward 2 Alderwoman Kelly Eckhoff voted for the beer tent, and said Summer Bash will not lose any of its merit.

"I really don't foresee any problems as long as everything is operated properly," she said. "I have been to other communities where they have been successful and I really look forward to this being successful."

Summer Bash, scheduled June 25-29, combines Heritage Days, Cruise Night, Hang Loose and Walldogs.
