BLOOMINGTON - Central Illinois residents have several opportunities to help with medical expenses for a boy severely injured when he fell from the hood of a minivan.

Brandon Major, 16, a student at Bloomington High School, was hurt Sept. 15.

The Jr. HYPE program at Bloomington Junior High School is holding two car washes to benefit a foundation set up by Brandon's family. The events will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Advanced Auto Parts, on Main Street across from BroMenn Regional Medical Center.

In addition, donations may be made to benefit funds established by family members:

- Checks made out to The Benefit of Brandon Major may be sent to Mid Illini Credit Union, Attn: Brandon Major Benefit Fund, 1811 Eastland Drive, Bloomington, IL 61702.

- Checks made out to Elizabeth Schneider may be mailed to National City Bank, Attn: Brandon Major Benefit Fund, 202 E. Washington St., Bloomington, IL 61701.

Brandon is expected to be transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for specialized care for spinal injuries. Messages of support can be posted and updates on his progress are available at Caringbridge.org.

Describing the incident as horseplay gone awry, police said Brandon was injured after he and another teen jumped on the hood of a moving van in the parking lot of O'Neil Park on the city's west side.

The other boy slid off the hood to the left when the driver applied the brakes, but Brandon slid under the front of the vehicle, said police.

The teen driver, who has not been identified because of her age, and her mother both face charges related to the accident.
