EL PASO - Lynda McClure died Monday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said Tuesday. | Photo gallery | Video

"The autopsy (performed Tuesday in Bloomington) showed cause of death was a contact range gunshot wound to the chest," Ruestman said.

Ruestman said this was "consistent with a self-inflicted wound."

Authorities believe that before shooting herself, Lynda McClure, 68, shot her husband, Keith McClure, 77, in the leg at their El Paso home.

Witnesses said Keith McClure was able to run next door about 11:30 a.m. Monday to ask somebody to call 911.

The investigation into the shooting on South Elm Street continues, Ruestman said, adding there is as yet no information about why it happened.

"We have a few more tests to do," Ruestman said, adding Keith McClure, who was treated at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, and released, has been very cooperative.

Ruestman said the couple was alone in the house and that it is believed that only one small-caliber weapon was involved.

"That's the assumption now, that there was one gun," Ruestman said.

He said ballistics tests should confirm this. He declined to identity the caliber of the gun.

He said authorities have talked to other witnesses beside Keith McClure, but he declined to identify them.

Meanwhile, a niece of the couple said Tuesday: "We will miss her. Many people will miss her."

Jessica Wilson of Crystal Lake said her aunt and uncle had lived in El Paso for only a year or two. Before that, they lived in Colfax and Louisiana, Mo., Wilson said.

Married since 1975, both had children from previous marriages, she said.

Wilson declined to speculate why the shooting occurred, adding, "It's tragic."
