100 years ago

Aug. 21, 1908: The 55 men of Bloomington's Company D are back home from Springfield riot duty. Captain Johnson marched them to the square where they were shot at again, "this time by a photographer." Troop B remains in Springfield, where order is returning.

75 years ago

Aug. 21, 1933: About 150 people gathered at the old Gildersleeve homestead (built in 1836) for dedication of the Melville Stone birthplace plaque. Stone was a founder of the Chicago Daily News (now gone) and was general manager of the Associated Press for almost 30 years.

50 years ago

Aug. 21, 1958: Adlai Stevenson, formerly of Bloomington, twice lost the Presidency to Dwight Eisenhower and doesn't plan to run again. But reporters asked him about a Democratic Party slogan for 1960. His answer: "Intellectuals of the world, unite."

25 years ago

Aug. 21, 1983: Siblings Glenn Gunn, 71, and Ruth Meece, 84, had not seen each other in 40 years. They had sisters Dorothy Adkins and Helen Veselak here, and through their efforts arranged a reunion at a family home, 1311 South Center.
