100 years ago
July 25, 1908: Tomorrow will be the final service in the First Congregational Church building. Next week demolition will begin to make way for a new building. The new church will be built using white sand brick from Clinton, Iowa, said to be a first for this area.
75 years ago
July 25, 1933: Walter Brown began serving a life sentence at Joliet for the shooting death of McLean County Deputy Charles E. Adams. Brown shot Adams during an argument with his father-in-law at a Normal grocery store. The defendant's bid for a new trial was denied.
50 years ago
July 25, 1958: Efforts continue to both save and demolish historic Major's Hall in downtown Bloomington. Today Hazel Buck Ewing, who favors preservation, gave a check toward a suitable memorial in case the building is torn down. (It was, and a memorial was put up).
25 years ago
July 25, 1983: The Midwestern heat wave is easing after leaving 140 people dead. 31 of those deaths were in Illinois but none was reported in Bloomington-Normal. Weather experts say the conditions that produce heat waves like this usually occur once a summer.
