Town OKs contract for 43 uptown trees

Key action: Approved an $18,495 contract with F&W Lawn Care and Landscaping for installation of 43 trees along Constitution Boulevard and a $21,000 pact with Johnston Contractors for façade renovations at 121 W. North St.
Other action: Approved a contract with City Manager Mark Peterson that provides a 3 percent raise, taking his salary to $140,530; extends his contract to March 31, 2011; and provides a $15,000 annual contribution to his deferred compensation plan.
Liquor commission issues fines, license

When: Sept. 8
Key action: Fined Casey's General Store, 1930 N. Linden St., $500 and issued a two-day liquor license suspension for Sept. 17 and 18; and fined Casey's General Store, 810 N. Beech St., and 707 Food and Liquor, 707 S. Main St., $250 each for serving alcohol to a minor during an Aug. 14 police sting.
Other action: Approved a liquor license to CVS Pharmacy, 1701 Fort Jesse Road.
Unit 5 council picks 6 topics
Meeting: Unit 5 School Board
When: Sept. 9
Key action: Heard the Unit 5 Citizens Advisory Council will study six topics this year: the green movement, social networking, high school dropouts, literacy, parent organizations and extra-curricular activities.
Other action: Approved a bid for turn lanes and a stoplight on U.S. 150 at the entrance to the new George L. Evans Junior High School; approved a resolution of support for the tax increment financing district for property that includes the former Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School; heard a breakfast program will be added at Parkside Junior High School.
