100 years ago
Aug. 30, 1908: The golf season will practically end next week with the annual Milner Cup match. Qualifying rounds will begin Tuesday. Play takes place at Bloomington Country Club. (Other courses, such as Lakeside, Maplewood and Highland Park were not yet built.)
75 years ago
Aug. 30, 1933: In the past 75 editions, the Pantagraph has run The Bible Game, where readers play by identifying Bible verses represented by the artwork published. The game ends today, with first prize of $225 to the winner. The total purse to all winners is $500.
50 years ago
Aug. 30, 1958: 1200 people attended the first day of the Central States Threshermen's Reunion in Pontiac. Steam threshing machines came from Illinois, Missouri, New York, Indiana and Ohio for this event. The Reunion continues through Labor Day.
25 years ago
Aug. 30, 1983: 90-degree temperatures are forcing shorter school days in five area counties, including McLean. Several districts are sending kids home an hour early as classrooms heat up. (More than once was heard, "It's August. What did you expect?")
