WENONA - An 81-year-old driver told police she doesn't remember what led to a crash that killed a 48-year-old South Streator woman Thursday morning east of Wenona, Illinois State Police said Friday.

Paula L. Medema, 48, was westbound on Illinois 17 around 8:05 a.m. when she was struck by a car driven by a Wilma E. Leatherman, 81, of Eureka, who was northbound on County Road East 11th, police said in a statement. Leatherman failed to stop at a stop sign at that intersection, and the two vehicles - both Ford Tauruses - ended up in the northwest ditch.

Medema was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:59 a.m., authorities said. Leatherman was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Streator, where she was still a patient Friday, though her condition was not immediately available.

No citations have been issued in the crash, which remains under investigation.
