100 years ago
Jan. 9, 1909: Most speed debates now concern cars. But Henry Goodlick was letting his horse trot at Main and Jefferson when his buggy ran down Earl Klopp, age six. The boy wasn't hurt seriously but Goodick wasn't watching where he was going, police said. Officers arrested him.
75 years ago
Jan. 9, 1934: A spectacular fire leveled the Pioneer Gun Club just outside and southeast of the city. The glow of the blaze could be seen downtown. Fire Chief Rolla Neal would not let city equipment respond, saying the fire had too much of a start.
50 years ago
Jan. 9, 1959: There was a fire at the burial vault plant at 1105 South Livingston this morning. Chief Behrend said the blaze apparently started in an overheated floor furnace. He estimated the building was about a 25 percent loss.
25 years ago
Jan. 9, 1984: One of the girls at Hammitt School in Normal looks a lot like Lady Diana at the same age. So the girls sent matching photos off to Lady Di in Great Britain. They got a response from her lady-in-waiting at Buckingham Palace.
