HARTSBURG - Hartsburg-Emden High School appears to be over a concern about a staphylococcus infection at the school, so tonight's home volleyball match will go on as scheduled, school officials said.
Concern over the contagious bacterial infection prompted the school to cancel other matches this week.
A student was diagnosed on Sept. 15 with the infection, which looks like a poison ivy rash with blistering and oozing. It can be spread by contact.
"I think just about every school likely has this infection," said Superintendent Donald Helm. "After 48 hours on an antibiotic, it is not contagious."
After learning of the infection Monday morning, the school took all necessary precautions, Helm said. Those included disinfecting the entire building and school buses and sending a note home with parents.
The district also called the Logan County Health Department, which confirmed the case.
"The student who had the infection was not on any sports team, but we still notified the other schools," helm said.
The volleyball team was supposed to play Monday at Warrensburg-Latham High School and Thursday at Mount Pulaski High School, but both of those schools opted to postpone as a precaution, Helm said.
Tonight's home match against West Prairie will go on as scheduled.
Helm said all sports teams were checked by a staff member who is trained as an emergency medical technician.
He said some students even went to their doctors, but no other cases were confirmed. Some students were diagnosed with poison ivy, however, he said.
"By Tuesday and Wednesday we had no other confirmed cases, and the entire school had been disinfected," said Helm. "Our Friday night game is still on schedule."
Helm said he was pleased with how quickly the school responded to the infection and that it did not lead to any further confirmed cases.
"Staph is something that can be spread if not treated quickly," said Helm, "We definitely got lucky."
