MIAMI - A Deerfield Beach, Fla., mother whose home is threatened by foreclosure slashed her young daughter's wrists early Monday and then slashed her own, according to police.

Both survived, and were in stable condition Monday at separate hospitals.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said Silvia Garcia's husband found his bleeding wife and child when he returned home. Police received his 911 call at 3:08 a.m.

Paramedics took Sabrina Garcia, who is 6 or 7 years old, by helicopter to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale from her home. Her mother was taken by ambulance to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach.

BSO Abuse and Neglect detectives said Garcia, 40, tried to kill her daughter, then take her own life. Police charged Garcia with one count of attempted murder.

Although her motive was not known Monday, court records show Garcia was experiencing serious financial trouble. Her Deerfield Beach home was threatened by foreclosure and her previous business, Sheeba's Cleaning Services, was dissolved in February 2008.

Several of her neighbors living in Waterways at Quiet Waters said they were surprised to hear that the incident happened at a home in their small neighborhood. They said they heard no sirens in the early hours of Monday morning.

Neighbors, who asked not to be named, said Garcia is a talkative and happy woman whom they often saw walking her daughter home from her school, Quiet Waters Elementary.
