BLOOMINGTON - Records related to prescription medication taken by a former Bloomington minister accused of assaulting his estranged wife were handed over Wednesday to prosecutors.

Ted Pierce, 47, is charged with aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a residence and domestic battery related to an incident in 2006. The 47-year-old former pastor of Bloomington's Second Presbyterian Church was in court with his attorney, Fredrick Erickson of Decatur, for a hearing on the state's request for records.

Erickson told Judge Kevin Fitzgerald that the defense has given Pierce's medical records to the prosecution. He asked that the materials be sealed to protect the confidentiality of Pierce's medical files.

After the hearing, Erickson told reporters that the records include information on prescription medication Pierce was taking at the time of incident. He declined to provide further details but confirmed that the drugs were prescribed by a physician.

In court documents previously filed in the case, the defense stated that Pierce was deprived of an understanding of his conduct because of the effects of medication.

The charges against Pierce accuse him of choking and threatening to kill his wife, Laura Pierce, from whom he was separated.

Assistant State's Attorney Scott Bennett said an expert hired by the prosecution will review the medical reports. A May 8 court date is set in the case.

Pierce was known as an active member of the community during his time with the church. The Compassion Center, a day program for homeless people, was one of the programs Pierce helped to establish.
