July 29, 1908: It's a Wednesday but almost every grocer in Decatur will be at Miller Park for the Decatur Retail Grocers Association picnic. Special interurban cars will bring the grocers and their families. The day will feature band concerts, food, and a welcoming delegation.
75 years ago
July 29, 1933: Illinois will open war on kidnappers and other crime gangs. Governor Henry Horner assembled more than 300 law enforcement types who endorsed his plan. "Mind you, when we break up the kidnapping gangs, other organized crime will decrease," he said.
50 years ago
July 29, 1958: Winds up to 62 miles per hour downed phone wires and made as mess of things Sunday. It was just what Robert Morgan needed his first day on the new job. Morgan is the new manager at General Telephone, replacing J.B. "Bert" Cherry, who will retire after 30 years.
25 years ago
July 29, 1983: Bloomington Broadcasting Company, parent of WJBC and WBNQ-FM, is adding a new station. The firm has bought WJBL-FM, a religious format station in Holland, Michigan. BBC already has stations in Johnson City and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
