100 years ago
Sept. 8, 1908: Public schools in Saybrook did not open on schedule because of an outbreak of scarlet fever in the home of Harry Groves. A rigid quarantine is in effect. The board of health wants the schools to stay closed to see if the disease will spread or if it is contained.
75 years ago
Sept. 8, 1933: The American State Bank will reopen Saturday. It has been closed since March 3 under the Illinois bank holiday. Half its $1.8 million will be free for transactions. The other $900,000 will stay in the bank.
50 years ago
Sept. 8, 1958: Among the freshmen at ISNU this fall is Jean Golliday, 1204 South Linden, Normal. Her great-great uncle was Charles Hovey, first president of the University. A June graduate of NCHS, Miss Golliday plans to be a teacher.
25 years ago
Sept. 8, 1983: Robert and Susan Odom of Bloomington recall their wedding 62 years ago in Tennessee. At 18 and 17, they were going to marry secretly after church but everyone found out. The wedding was held in front of a crowd on a country road. They returned today to repeat their vows.
