Oct. 29, 1908: Election Day is next Tuesday. Around town an observer can see small groups of men engaged in street corner debates. The same is true on the public square. Who will be President? William Howard Taft or William Jennings Bryan?
75 years ago
Oct. 29, 1933: V.W. Hudson of Anchor is the winner of the McLean County corn husking contest. He gathered a net load of 2,206 pounds (31.56 bushels) during the allotted time. The contest drew twelve contestants and 3,000 spectators on a farm near Chenoa.
50 years ago
Oct. 29, 1958: It will cost more to attend Illinois Wesleyan next year. The board of trustees approved raising tuition to $650 for new students. Those already enrolled will still pay $600 a year. There will also be a $50 activity fee next year. This year there is no such fee.
25 years ago
Oct. 29, 1983: There were signs of improving times when the unemployment figures came out. Bloomington-Normal had the second lowest rate in Illinois behind Champaign-Urbana. Kankakee, Decatur and East St. Louis, all hard hit areas, also showed drops in the jobless rate.
