BLOOMINGTON - Police said they believe whoever fired multiple shots at a near-west side intersection and hit a passing van Tuesday was part of a larger group that ran into a nearby apartment building after the shooting.

The driver of the van was not injured after a bullet hit the rear driver's side of the vehicle around 3:45 p.m. at Market Street and Roosevelt Avenue, police said.

The driver, who police said was just in the area and not a specific target, continued on to a nearby Bloomington Fire Department station to ask for help, police spokesman Duane Moss said Thursday.

Moss said there have been no arrests in the case, but police have interviewed some of the group - between six and 10 people - who witnesses said ran into the apartment building at 412 N. Roosevelt Ave. shortly after the shots were fired.

A search of that building turned up a snub-nose revolver in an apartment closet that police believe was used in the incident, Moss said. Ballistics will be run to confirm it's the weapon, he said.

A police officer who was nearby when the shots were fired said he heard three shots, and other witnesses also reported hearing multiple shots, Moss said.

Moss said it was not necessary to make a suspect description public because investigators have interviewed the group likely responsible.

The case is still under investigation, police said.
