BLOOMINGTON - After seeing that United Way of McLean County's annual campaign fell $1 million short of its goal, State Farm Insurance Cos. pledged another $75,000.
"Sometimes when State Farm starts, it helps get the whole thing going," said Sarah Coffer, marketing and communication director for United Way of McLean County.
United Way reported last week that $3,416,111 had been raised since the campaign began in August, far from the organization's $4.4 million goal. Last year, United Way raised $4,221,136, so the lack of funding this year could force the organization to cut some programs.
Hearing the news, State Farm decided to donate more money, said spokesman Fraser Engerman. The company's total contribution this year, he said, is now $472,000.
State Farm's recent contribution pushed United Way's 2007 funds to $3,491,111. The organization remains $908,889 short of its goal.
United Way donations fund programs that help the homeless, victims of child and elder abuse and neglect, families in need, people with disabilities, and individuals who lack basic health care.
