NORMAL - For a 22-year-old, Jenna Voigt has seen a lot of the world. The 2004 Normal Community High School graduate will add to her travels come August.

That's when Voigt, a senior at Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. will go to the Beijing Olympics as part of her studies in broadcast journalism.

The senior in media communications, who already has studied in Germany and Australia, will help set up interviews and distribute Olympic results. "I'll be a liaison officer in the stadium where they'll play volleyball," said Voigt, a daughter of Larry and Dana Voigt of Normal.

She'll work with Beijing Olympic Broadcasting, which will provide NBC with its U.S. feed for the XXIX games.

Voigt will be in China from Aug. 8-24 and is looking forward to the experience, for which she'll be paid and receive intern credit.

The trip not only should satisfy her urge to travel, but help her career goal of being an international broadcast journalist.

Jim Owens, who heads the Communication Arts Department at Asbury, agrees the trip should help Voigt's career.

"She will have a chance to work with some of the best broadcast professionals in the world … and participate in a cross-cultural experience," said Owens.

Owens said Voigt is one of 50 Asbury students picked for the trip. Roughly 120 students applied. "Jenna was selected due to her track record of hard work, dependability and professional attitude," Owens said.

Voigt can't wait to get to work in China. "It will be a great experience and something unique to put on my resume," she said, adding she may take a Chinese language class to help prepare for the assignment.

In the meantime, during a break from her studies, she practiced thinking on her feet, as a broadcast journalist must. Asked to explain the importance of Olympic competition, she said:

"Olympic sports competition is important because it helps foster a commonality between various cultures."
