HEYWORTH -- Heyworth students will face a tougher path to earn high honors in the 2009-10 school year.

The new requirement calls for all A's, or a 4.0 grade point average, to achieve high honors. Previously, the high honor roll listed students achieving all A's with one B.

"I believe the high honor roll should be all A's," said board member Tim Bobell. "I feel if we include a B, we lower our standards. High honor roll is high honor roll."

Board member Steve Beuttel felt allowing B would motivate students.

The board also examined raising the standards for honor roll by eliminating the ability to earn a C and still make the list. Current requirements are A's and B's with no more than one C.

Board member Jean Schmidt thought that might be taking it too far.

"The high honor roll is unique and carries higher expectations," Schmidt noted. "I think on the honor roll, a 3.0 (GPA) is what you're looking for, so if they get that C but have an A to balance that out, hopefully they'll be motivated by that and bring it up next time. But at least they know they made honor roll and that's important to kids. Some are never going to get all A's."
