LEXINGTON - If the McLean County Board approves a proposed ban on indoor smoking, Ben Gildersleeve questions what is next.
Gildersleeve, the owner of Hazy Hills Golf Course in Hudson, told county officials and board members he opposes a proposed ban for the unincorporated areas in the county. The ban would mirror those approved earlier this year by Bloomington and Normal city councils. The bans in those cities go into effect Jan. 1.
Gildersleeve and eight others spoke at a community forum Tuesday at the Lexington Community Center that drew about 20 people. Three more public forums are scheduled in October and November.
"The county is overstepping its bounds," Gildersleeve said. "It is improper to regulate people's private lives. What is next, red meat?"
The majority of those who spoke during the nearly 45-minute meeting said they were concerned about over regulation and property rights.
Several bar owners, including Scott Tuggle of Kicks in Towanda and Mike Holder of Green Gables in Hudson, said the proposed ban would hurt their businesses because customers will go to places where smoking is allowed.
Kathy Franklin of Lexington was the only person to speak in favor of the proposed ban. She called it a health issue and added the ban would protect employees' health.
Assistant State's Attorney Eric Ruud said about 263 businesses, including six taverns, in the unincorporated area would be affected by a ban.
The next forum is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at Water Tower Place, 212 E. Pine St., LeRoy. Additional forums are scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course and 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Government Center, 115 E. Washington St., both in Bloomington.
